Steve Anson is a prolific song writer, guitarist and lead vocalist. Ever since he was saved back in the early 80s he has been writing and singing original, uncompromisingly Christian music to the glory of God and to the edification of His people. He has written hundreds of songs in that time. Joseph Stephen began playing drums when he was 11, and writing and singing when he was 16. He met Steve when Steve was a youth group leader at Hackham South Christian Church, in Adelaide's southern suburbs. Joseph and Steve began singing together in 1987 and soon formed the band Messenger along with a few other church members. The original line-up was Steve on guitar and lead vocals, Joseph on drums and vocals, Alex Grant on bass guitar, and Jocelyn Lowde sang vocals.
Later they changed their name to Ordinary People. Ordinary People toured South Australian churches, camps, and other events. Other guest musicians occasionally joined them including Scott Ferler on keyboard, and Tarina Revink on flute. Les Ollington travelled with them as their sound engineer and roadie until he left in the early 90s. Gradually, all the rest of the members left until only Joseph and Steve were left.
In 1995, prior to Joseph leaving the band to get married, Steve and Joseph recorded about 30 songs together at the Hackham South Christian Church hall, with Joseph's wife to be, Mary Florence mixing.
After Joseph left in 1996, Steve changed the band's name to Set Free. Tarina Revink joined full time, playing flute and singing vocals in place of Jocelyn who had left earlier. Dave Flood played bass guitar, and the band went through several drummers including Craig Deugarde, Colin Sweeney and Gareth Higginson. They recorded 1 cd during this time. Steve then left due to health reasons.
In 2019, after a long break, when Joseph was visiting Steve in Adelaide, they began singing together again as if they'd never had a break.
In 2022 Joseph began producing their music, Steve still playing guitar and singing lead vocals, sending Joseph a combined guitar and vocal track. Joseph plays all other instruments, and sings multiple harmonies, and mixes and produces their music on his farm in Tasmania. Further Down the Road is their first album since they began singing together again. It comes 35 years further down the road from when they first sang together. Joseph’s daughter-in-law, Hayley, sings harmony on Come See the Gift.
They decided to call their new duo “Two Servants.”
Steve is a retired garbage truck driver. He has been married to Pauline (affectionately known by everyone as Mandy) for 48 years and they have 3 children and 7 grand children.
Joseph is a totally blind software engineer. He has been married to Mary Florence for 27 years and they have 9 children.
